Srinagar: In wake of the prevailing situation due to outbreak of COVID-19, the Below Poverty Line (BPL) families in Srinagar would be provided free foodgrains as long as the lockdown remains enforced, officials said.
The distribution of foodgrains for the ongoing month will start on Saturday and will be completed within two weeks.
Under this initiative around 30 thousand quintals of foodgrains would be distributed free of cost to over 1.4 lac BPL families in the district.
The move will benefit around 6 lac persons, who will be provided 5 five kilograms of rice per person per month.
Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Dr Shahid Iqbal Choudhury, who is also the Chairman District Disaster Management Authority Srinagar said, “The initiative is a recognition of the need for support and an attempt to reach out to impoverished residents,”
