Kupwara: In a heart-wrenching incident, two minor boys drowned to death in seperate incidents in Lolab valley of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district Monday afternoon.
The incident left the valley shell-shocked with local residents urging the administration to fence the ponds at the earliest to save such eventuality in future.
Bodies of both the victims have been recovered, officials said.
A 10-year-old boy drowned in a pond – Nulle Sar – at Diver while taking a bath. Identified as Yawar Manzoor Ganai son of Manzoor Ahmad Ganai, the boy was retrieved in an unconscious state and taken to a nearby health facility. The doctors there declared him as brought dead on arrival.
A police official confirmed the incident and said that the body was handed over to the family.
In another incident, a 15-year-old boy identified as Asif Ahmad Khan son of Ashiq Ahmad khan, a resident of Chandigam, drowned in a pond – Budd Sarr – in the vicinity.
Rescue operation was subsequently launched jointly by SDRF, police, army alongside locals. The body of victim was retrieved from the water body.
The incidents happened one after another leaving the Lolab Valley residents shell-shocked.
Meanwhile, people in the area have urged the district administration to erect fencing around the ponds on priority.
“These open ponds have become a cause of concern to the inhabitants as each day youths and children take bath in them”, a senior citizen said.
