In a chilling revelation from Tripura, police on June 11 arrested six individuals after the body of a 24-year-old man, missing for nearly three days, was discovered stuffed inside a suitcase and hidden in a freezer in Dhalai district.
The victim, Shariful Islam — an electrician working on the Smart City project in Agartala —was reportedly murdered over a love triangle involving a young woman he was romantically involved with. Police said a cousin of the girl, Dr. Dibakar Saha, 28, was also in love with her and orchestrated the murder out of jealousy.
According to Tripura West Superintendent of Police Kiran Kumar, Dibakar invited Shariful to a friend’s house on June 8 under the pretext of gifting him something. There, he allegedly strangled Shariful with the help of three others—Joydeep Das (20), Animesh Yadav (21), and Nabanita Das (25). Shariful’s body was then bound and crammed into a suitcase.
Dibakar allegedly transported the suitcase to Gandacherra the following day and hid it inside an ice cream freezer at his father Dipak Saha’s shop. Police revealed that Dibakar had purchased the suitcase two days before the murder.
The six arrested include Dibakar, his father Dipak Saha (52), mother Debika Saha (40), and the three others present during the crime. The investigation began after Shariful’s family filed a missing-person complaint on June 9 at Agartala’s New Capital Complex police station.
Authorities say mobile phone records reveal mutual romantic exchanges between the victim and the girl, establishing the motive behind the gruesome killing.
