‘You spent ₹2.5 crore on me — trust me’: Tennis player Radhika’s last plea before father shot her dead

In a chilling turn of events, a story of ambition and sacrifice spiraled into tragedy when national-level tennis player Radhika Yadav was shot dead by her father, Deepak Yadav, at their home in Haryana’s Gurugram on July10.

Investigations reveal that Deepak, once the driving force behind his daughter’s tennis journey, had grown increasingly distressed and reclusive, allegedly tormented by taunts from villagers who mocked him for “living off” Radhika’s earnings.

The same man who invested over ₹2.5 crore in his daughter’s training ultimately pulled the trigger after she failed to abandon her dreams.

According to police sources, Radhika had been trying to reassure her father and revive his faith in her vision. “You’ve spent ₹2.5 crore on me. I will not let that money go to waste.

I will train players, use my experience. Just trust me,” she reportedly told him in a final effort to counsel him through his spiral of insecurity.

A dream interrupted

Radhika’s promising tennis career was abruptly halted two years ago by a serious injury. Despite the setback, she remained rooted in the sport — training young aspirants by booking courts across the city.

Off the court, she experimented with building a social media presence, hoping to also carve a niche as an influencer. A music video featuring her was released last year, and she frequently created content for Instagram.

But her father disapproved of her digital ventures. Pressured repeatedly, Radhika eventually deleted all her accounts. Even her coaching sessions — her last tether to tennis — came under fire, with Deepak insisting she shut them down, claiming he earned enough through his ₹15 lakh-per-year broker business.

Cracking under pressure

The father, police say, had become deeply affected by perceived ridicule in the community. For weeks leading up to the incident, he showed signs of psychological distress — sleepless nights, withdrawal from family, and erratic behavior.

His frustration reportedly escalated with Radhika’s determination to maintain her independence and continue coaching.

The emotional and financial weight of years spent chasing athletic glory, combined with social stigma and control dynamics, culminated in a breakdown that ended in bloodshed.

Deepak Yadav has been arrested and sent to 14-day judicial custody. The case has sparked outrage and heartbreak, as the nation mourns not just the loss of a talented athlete but also the promise of a young woman who refused to give up on her dreams.
