In minutes, flash floods swept away homes, shops, a langar serving devotees, and even a security post, leaving the once-bustling foothill settlement buried under mud and rubble.
Survivors spoke of a deafening roar, a wall of churning water, and the horror of watching neighbors vanish before their eyes.
Mountains in mourning
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said over 100 people were injured, 38 of them critically, with rescuers pulling 167 survivors from the wreckage.
Many bore fractured ribs, deep lacerations, and wounds embedded with stones — a brutal testament to the sheer force of the flood.
Police placed the entire district on high alert as Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Sharma and SSP Naresh Singh led search and relief operations.
Control rooms and help desks sprang up across vulnerable zones, while emergency teams stood ready to respond at a moment’s notice.
Race against time
An all-out rescue push is underway, with the Army’s White Knight Corps, NDRF, SDRF, police, and local volunteers working shoulder to shoulder.
Two more NDRF teams have been airlifted from Jammu, accompanied by excavators, ambulances, and medical staff.

The annual Machail Mata yatra, which began on July 25, has been suspended indefinitely. Independence Day celebrations in the region have been cancelled in a mark of mourning.
