In a major embarrassment for Delhi Police, an inspector posted at the Greater Kailash police station has been arrested along with an accomplice for allegedly demanding a bribe of ₹30 lakh from a woman facing criminal charges.
The arrest followed a sting operation by the vigilance unit, which caught the inspector’s associate red-handed while accepting a part of the bribe.
The accused officer, identified as Inspector Jitendra Singh Yadav, allegedly promised to “do a favour” during the investigation of an FIR lodged against the complainant and her husband.
Police said Yadav instructed the woman to hand over the money to Dharamveer, a man posing as his legal counsel.
“The complainant told us that the bribe amount was negotiated down to ₹30 lakh,” said Anyesh Roy, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Vigilance).
“Yadav directed her to deliver the money to Dharamveer, who claimed to be his advocate.”
Acting swiftly, a team led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Vigilance) laid a trap. On Monday, Dharamveer was caught red-handed accepting ₹1 lakh from the complainant. He was immediately taken into custody.
Further investigation revealed that Dharamveer is not a licensed advocate and had falsely assumed the role to facilitate the bribe.
A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Inspector Yadav and his accomplice were arrested and have been remanded to one day of police custody for further interrogation.
This development raises serious concerns over corruption within the ranks of the city’s law enforcement and has triggered an internal review of all cases handled by the accused officer.
