A poignant tale of love, loss, and tragedy has emerged from the wreckage of Air India flight AI171, which crashed moments after takeoff from Ahmedabad on June 12, killing over 260 people in one of the deadliest air disasters in India’s recent history.
Among the victims was Arjun Manubhai Patolia, 36, a London resident and father of two, who had traveled to Gujarat to honor his late wife’s dying wish — to have her ashes immersed in the sacred river Narmada.
Just a week earlier, Patolia’s wife, Bharatiben, had succumbed to a terminal illness in London. In her final moments, she had asked him to return her ashes to her motherland.
Arjun made the journey with quiet resolve, visiting his ancestral village of Vadiya in Amreli district, where he performed the last rites surrounded by grieving relatives.
After completing the rituals, Arjun was preparing to return to the UK, where his young daughters — aged 4 and 8 — were waiting for their father. He boarded Air India flight AI171, bound for London Gatwick, on what was meant to be his journey home.
But tragedy struck minutes later.
The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner plummeted shortly after takeoff, crashing into a medical college hostel near the airport. CCTV footage captured the aircraft struggling to gain altitude before erupting into a fireball upon impact. Of the 242 people on board, only one person survived.

“He had just completed his wife’s final wish. Now we have lost him too,” said Krish Jagdish Patolia, Arjun’s nephew. “It’s unbearable. We lost both of them in just one week.”
The incident has sent shockwaves through Indian and British communities alike. Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the crash site and the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital on June 13, where forensic teams continue to identify bodies.
A team of over 70 doctors has been deployed for post-mortems, and five victims have so far been identified and handed over to families.
Authorities are investigating the crash’s cause, with aviation and forensic teams scouring debris for clues. Air India has yet to issue a formal explanation but has activated emergency response units to support affected families.
For the Patolia family, the heartbreak is immeasurable. Two children in London are now orphaned. And a promise of love fulfilled has turned into a tragedy that spans continents.
