In an incident that has left medical professionals and villagers equally astounded, a one-year-old boy in Bihar’s West Champaran district reportedly killed a venomous cobra with his bare teeth — and survived the ordeal.
The toddler, identified as Govind Kumar from Mohachchhi Bankatwa village in Majhaulia block, was rushed to Bettiah’s Government Medical College and Hospital after he fell unconscious, allegedly moments after clamping down on the snake with his jaw.
Doctors say the child had first been taken to a nearby primary health center before being referred to the district hospital. “According to the family, the boy was playing at home when he grabbed the cobra and bit it.
His grandmother saw him chewing something—only to realise, to her horror, that it was a snake. By the time she intervened, the reptile was already dead, and the child had collapsed,” said Dr. Duvakant Mishra, the hospital superintendent.
Govind is currently under strict medical observation. Although he has not yet shown symptoms of envenomation, doctors remain on high alert and are prepared to begin anti-venom treatment if necessary.
Experts say survival in such cases is extremely rare. “This is one of the most extraordinary cases we’ve seen — not just medically, but in terms of instinctive response.
A toddler fending off and fatally injuring a venomous snake is unheard of,” said a senior medical officer at the hospital.
The story has left locals stunned. In rural Bihar, where encounters with snakes are not uncommon, many are struggling to believe the sheer audacity — and survival — of the child.
While it remains unclear whether the snake managed to inject venom before dying, the boy’s family and doctors are treating the situation with the utmost urgency.
For now, little Govind remains a symbol of both miracle and mystery — a tiny warrior who took on one of nature’s deadliest creatures and lived to tell the tale.
