Jammu and Kashmir Minister for Health, Medical Education, Social Welfare, and Education, Sakeena Itoo, on June 4 said that the reservation committee constituted by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is examining all public representations and is expected to submit its report before the set deadline.
Speaking to reporters during her visit to Bandipora, Itoo said the committee was tasked with reviewing concerns arising from the recently announced 2024 reservation policy, which has triggered protests across Kashmir. Under the new policy, 69% of the population now competes for just 33% of the open merit seats — a shift that has drawn sharp criticism from several quarters.
“The reservation committee is thoroughly examining the submissions received, and the report will be submitted within the scheduled time frame,” she assured.
Addressing concerns in the health sector, Itoo confirmed that all previously attached doctors have been detached and reposted to their original places of duty. She acknowledged the ongoing doctor shortage in the region, noting that the government is taking concrete steps to address the crisis.
“Since the formation of this government, the Chief Minister ordered recruitment of 500 doctors, and they’ve already been posted to remote and underserved areas,” she said. However, she added that the problem is far from over. “The shortage persists, and the government is actively working on a proposal to fill the remaining vacancies.”
Itoo also revealed that the longstanding ban on the creation of new posts — effective since 2007 — is currently under review. “Where there is shortage, creation must take place. The government will try its best to resolve this. Inshallah, it will be done soon,” she said.
On departmental staffing issues, she said any discrepancies will be examined. “If a sanctioned post exists at a specific location, the doctor concerned will be sent back there,” she added.
The Minister emphasized that the administration is working simultaneously on detachment, fresh recruitment, and post creation to stabilize and strengthen healthcare delivery in Jammu and Kashmir.
