In a bold and unflinching address, India’s Chief of Defense Staff General Anil Chauhan broke his silence on the controversial setbacks of Operation Sindoor, asserting that professional armed forces are measured not by momentary losses but by long-term strategic outcomes.

“Losses don’t matter. The result is what counts,” General Chauhan said, addressing an audience at Savitribai Phule Pune University during a lecture on Future Wars and Warfare on June 3.

“If you win, who asks how many wickets fell?” he added — a pointed metaphor clearly intended to quash criticism over Indian military losses following the Pahalgam terror attack.

The remarks marked General Chauhan’s most direct public response yet to mounting speculation and scrutiny over the extent of India’s casualties during the operation.

No jet losses’

Questions about whether Pakistani air defenses shot down Indian jets — including advanced Rafales — have dogged the military in recent weeks.

Speaking to Bloomberg TV in Singapore, General Chauhan dismissed Pakistan’s claims of downing six aircraft, refusing to engage in a numbers game.

“It is not about a jet being shot down… but why it was shot down. What were the tactical errors? That’s the real question,” he said. The priority, he stressed, lies in strategic analysis — not public scorekeeping.

In Pune, he doubled down: “We can release the data — how many aircraft were destroyed, how many radars were hit… but that’s not the priority. Victory is.”

Drawing a red line with Sindoor

General Chauhan underscored that Operation Sindoor was not about theatrics but a decisive shift in India’s posture against terrorism.

He labeled the Pahalgam massacre — where civilians were killed execution-style — as an act of “profound cruelty,” describing it as the final straw in a decades-long pattern of bloodshed.

“India has suffered nearly 20,000 terror-related deaths. Enough is enough,” he declared. “We will not be held hostage by terrorism or nuclear blackmail.”

Operation Sindoor, he emphasized, was India’s “line in the sand” — a direct response to Pakistan’s long-touted doctrine of “bleeding India by a thousand cuts.”

Venom, violence, and state-sponsored terror

The CDS also took direct aim at Pakistan’s military leadership, singling out Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir for inciting hatred in the run-up to the Pahalgam assault.

“Terror has become institutionalized across the border,” General Chauhan said. “India refuses to live under the threat of radical extremism masquerading as statecraft.”

The war India is really fighting

Capping his remarks, the General issued a call for realism over rhetoric. “Sensationalism is easy. Strategy is hard,” he said. “Victory lies not in optics, but in deterrence — in forcing the adversary to rethink their calculus.”

In the end, the General left no room for ambiguity. “Professional militaries don’t count wickets. They play to win the match.”
