In a significant action, Jammu & Kashmir State Commission for Protection of Women and Child Rights (JKSCPWCR) on Wednesday directed SSP Crime Branch to appear in person before the Commission on July 22, in connection with a horrific murder case of an eight-year-old boy in Kupwara, a year ago.
The Chairperson Vasundhara Pathak Masoodi took Suo-motto cognizance of the sensational murder case of Umar Farooq, who was found dead under mysterious circumstances in Gushi area of the district, a year ago.

In light of a report published in Curtain Raiser, the Commission noted that the parents of the victim threatened to end their lives due to unprecedented delay in bringing culprits to book.
“Despite the lapse of more than a year in this case, the case is still hanging fire and no headway has been made so far,” the Commission observed.
“In view of the media report on a sensational murder case, you are directed to appear in person before the Commission on Monday 2 PM,”
The Commission took a serious note of the delay in investigations by Crime Branch and sought Action Taken Report. It also sought to know as to why the charge sheet has not been filed so far.
The gruesome murder of eight-year-old boy, who was the only son of a street vendor of Gulgam village had triggered days’ long widespread agitation in Kashmir and shutdown in Kupwara town.
Following mounting pressure to track down the culprits, the authorities handed over investigations to Crime Branch in September last year but there has been no headway so far.
